Stuff You Already Know: And Every College Student Should by Gina DeLapa was a book that Monkey Boy and I are co-reviewing.  Both of us read through the book and are sharing our views on the book here in this post.

This book written by Gina DeLapa  is divided into three main parts.

– One Foot In

– Both Feet in

– One Foot Out

Gina talks about  you need to know when you just entered collage, succeeding during the college years and deciding on what to do after you have completed college.

The 367 nuggets which she provided in the book gives one an insight to how to survive the collage years.  It gives one a perspective of what to expect and how to fully utilize the time that one has in college to explore and learn about what is most suitable field that one should pursue.

College is a great time to learn as much as you can from life outside the classroom.  It is a great time to discover yourself and learn about your strengths and weaknesses.

It is a time where one can experiment within limits and have a deeper understanding about how one’s action affects decision making and your potential career path.

My thoughts

I really enjoyed reading through the anecdotes that Gina had dished out generously in her book. It would certainly have helped me make better use of the time I had when I was in college some 20 years ago.

I would certainly be more adventurous and try out the different subject combinations which I was entitled to instead of sticking to the “SAFE” subjects within the degree that I had chosen.

I also would have spent more time building up  relationships with others as it would have been a great opportunity to do some networking.

Monkey Boy’s Thoughts

He found the book really interesting . Even though he is still far from entering college it did give him a glimpse of how it would be like for him if he were going to college.

It was an eye opener for him reading about what how it will be for him in the future when he enters college in time to come.

I do recommend this book if you have kids who will be going off to college soon.

Highlights of May 2015

Selfie taken in the car

I have been really busy this month as I’ve been extremely engaged in the new venture that I am in. Besides being a teacher and a blogger I’ve recently became a Mary Kay Beauty consultant and am learning the ropes in direct selling.

It is a learning experience for me as I step out of my comfort zone and start to learn to interact more with people. Being an introvert I find it difficult opening up and talking to strangers.  I get tongue tied at times trying to  find the appropriate words to use.  It can be stressful at times and it is something that I am trying to overcome.

May has been a month of learning and reflection for me as I focused on helping the boys prepare for the SA1 exams.

Monkey boy studying

Monkey boy studying

Being in Primary 5 this year isn’t easy.  There is so many more things to learn and the expectation is certainly much higher then last year.

I’m halfway through my Bridging the GAP – P5 series as I’ve managed to cover how I bridge the gap in English . In the next few months I’ll cover how I teach Monkey boy in Maths and Science and move on to my greatest challenge so far- tutoring Doggie boy who is currently in Primary 3.

Light purple blooms

I managed to clear my backdated travel posts from my previous trip to Taiwan and showcases the flowers  that I photographed. I also  shared how we made our own anniversary rings this year at a jewelery making workshop that R and I attended.

Taking a stroll along the wooden walkway at the Gao Mei Wetlands  was really romantic and I really enjoyed myself there soaking in the sight of the setting sun.

Making Thunder Tea

Making Thunder Tea

It was certainly an interesting experience making this traditional Hakka Tea.  Thunder tea  certainly requires many different ingredients and it tasted vastly different from the teas that I am used to drinking.

I had a fun time travelling back in time as part of the Time travelling blog train hosted by MadPyschMum- Madeline.  If I could have the opportunity I would certainly love to go back to my university days  when I was studying in Melbourne University.  I miss those carefree days. However looking at my life now I would certainly not have changed anything as I’m really grateful for being where I am now.

Grace for the Imperfect Mom

Grace for the Imperfect Mom

Being a Mom does make one cast doubts on oneself especially if things don’t seem to work out the way that we want. This book – Grace for the Imperfect Mom  was an excellent read that I had that reminded me that everything does happen for a reason and based on GOD’s timing and not mine.

How was your month of May?
