Writer’s Workshop: Only a Dream
A Traditional Japanese Room with Tatami Mat
Sleeping is something that we do every night. It is the time of the day where we drift off to a foreign land while our body recharges itself.
It is when dreams may occur depending on the state of sleep you are in. Some say dreams are part of your subconscious. They may be based on snippets of your past life or some things that you are currently struggling with. No one really knows.
I remember when I was studying in Australia I had one of the most terrifying dream to date. It doesn’t scare me that much now thinking back but then as a 16yr old it really did scare the daylights out of me.
At that time I was staying in a hostel near Bondi Beach, Sydney and had my own room with a bunk bed. It was a simple room with a single cupboard, writing table and bed. The writing table was in the center of the room next to a window.

I remember that night I left the window half open as it was rather stuffy. ( We didn’t have fans as it is not the norm in Australia) I though I had woken up but in fact I was actually still dreaming.
Everything looked so real but it wasn’t. I tried switching on the light but just couldn’t do it. I tried to open the door but it didn’t budge.
It felt like an out of body experience like how they feature ghosts on TV. I was fully aware of my surroundings but not able to interact with it .
It felt weird.. really weird. Was I awake or not? Was I still alive?
I suddenly felt that I was floating towards the opened window as if it was going to float out of the room through the window.
The feeling sent me into a panic and I kept on repeating to myself that I had to wake up NOW or I may never wake up.
I couldn’t sleep the rest of the night and went over to stay at a friend’s house as I was too frightened to stay alone in the room. It took a while for me to regain my nerves.
From that day onwards I always made sure that the windows were closed before sleeping for peace of mind.
Do you have weird dreams too?
How do you cope with them?

Just popping over from my first look at Mama Kat’s workshop and I have to say that sculpture/exhibit is just stunning .
When it comes to dreams my worst are those where you jolt awake and have to catch your breath! Most the time when I have a dream like that I can’t even remember what happened!

I have some few dreams as well that scares me. I would make sure to close the windows and doors. If that happens to me I would do same thing, stay at your friends house..:) Have great day

Your dream sounds terrifying, and I can sort of relate to it a bit. I use to have nightmares where I was falling off a cliff. That falling, falling, falling sensation is terrifying and it jolts me awake quickly. Or, sometimes I have dreamed I am drowning. I sense I am suffocating to the point I wake up. Nowadays, I don’t seem to have as many weird dreams.
However, my most overly active bedtime visions came when I was young girl, but the really funny thing about that is I had the good presence of mind to tell myself in my dreams that I was only dreaming and there was no need to be afraid. Today, if I have an unsettling dream that wakes me, I quietly pray asking God to calm my mind and to ask for His protection upon anyone I may have been in my dreams. Usually within a matter of minutes, I drift off to sleep again.
Dreams can be fun or scary. Sometimes they give us comfort and other times concerns. I think the latter is God’s way of speaking to us to pray for someone in need. God works in mysterious ways.
I enjoyed today’s post and questions!

There was only one time that I experienced a bad dream… in one of the old hotels. It really felt bad… all I could do is PRAY! I am quite lucky that this doesn’t happen to me often.

Praying certainly does help to calm one’s nerves. That is what I do often too 🙂

I’ve had weird dreams before also but most of them I don’t remember anymore. Usually, if I don’t feel so good about the dream, I pray about it to keep my peace.

Calling by for Alphabet Thursday, dreams can seem so realistic at the time.

It’s funny that you shared this post today. I woke up this morning from an awful dream. Of course, I can’t even remember what I was dreaming about now.

oooh, weird dream. My least favorite dreams are “driving a car” dreams and I never seem able to “really see” where I’m going, brakes don’t work , etc.
By the Way, do any spammer’s ever lie and check the box anyway that they’re not spammers? I always wonder.

@Madamdreaweaver,
Regarding your question on spammers my answer would be YES- those would be people who are employed to do backlinks by SEO companies 🙂

Oh, just reading your dream gave me goosebumps already. I couldn’t imagine the fright you felt that night!

I’ve heard it said that everyone dreams, but we just don’t remember them. It’s been a long time since I remember a dream. The ones I remember are the ones that suddenly wake me up.

i think in our lingo, we called that “bangungot.” the trick is for you to gain as much energy as you can and try to move for you to get out of that state. recently, my dreams are pleasant 🙂
