SOC: Embracing a Minimalist Approach

It feels great getting rid of all the excess stuff that has been lying around and collecting dust in the house. It’s amazing how satisfying to see the cupboards all clean and items inside neatly placed.
We can do away with all the fluff and only purchase stuff which we actually will use. Through the years I’ve learned that there is no need for so many different items. How many can one use actually? Sometimes we have so much stuff that we become unaware of what we actually have.
While clearing out the shelves and cupboards I realised that I had make up which I hardly used and has expired since then. Due to the clutter many things were not easy to find and in the end there were many duplicated items which were half used and wasted.
One doesn’t need 20 different pairs of shoes. There is certainly one or two favourite pairs which you will always use while the other 18 pairs collect dust in the shoe cabinet.
I’ve limited the number of shoes that I have to 5 pairs – 2 pairs of heels, a sports shoes, sandals and a pair of slippers. The kids have two pairs each for outing and another two pairs of school shoes. Each of them are given one shelve on the kids shoe rack.
I feel there is no need for excesses and to live with what is comfortable and necessary is more then enough.

It feels so good to de-clutter. I try to do it as much as I can but I find with two kids it is harder to make the time…and we seem to accumulate even more!
I loves shoes, like really love them. It is the only thing since I’ve had kids that has stayed the same as far as weight. But just the other day I was thinking how I seem to always wear the same shoes over and over. I think it may be time to re-think my love affair with shoes. Just don’t tell my husband!

@Melisa,
It is hard de-cluttering with kids around. I get my 3 kids to help me when I de-clutter.. it makes the process much easier and faster and everyone enjoys themselves while working together. I’m working to get my weight down after baby #3 (She’s 13 mths now). Great to hear you managed to stay the same weight even after 2 kids.

I have been decluttering, too – and yes, aren’t perfectly organized closets and shelves delectable? They make me smile, just by being themselves!
I am grateful you were a part of SOCSunday today!!

I hate clutter. I like to have only what I need in the house. My husband and I have rid our home of all the things we really don’t need. It does feel so liberating! 🙂

Good luck! It’s very theraputic! I do it regularly … and then I go out and buy more stuff! Oops!

Good for you! De-cluttering and getting my home into a minimalist state is an on-going battle for me. I hear ya on the make-up, I try to keep up on that as best I can – but there is always something old left in the drawer.

@Amanda,
I’ve stemmed that problem by limiting the number of make up items I can have to 1-2 shades and I’m now only allowed to purchase new ones to replace only if the colour is fully used up.

Wow I am impressed. I try to embrace this theory but it seems to always be ahead of me. The stuff comes in faster than I can get rid of it!

I, too, have started a decluttering project…during the past 3 years while I was studying full time (plus all my ‘mommy duties, of course :D) things have gotten built up to a point that I just feel stressed in my own home! ‘course…the decluttering may take some time…but just getting started has made me feel better already!

@Tezzie,
great to hear that you have started decluttering.. it’s always the 1st step which is the hardest but once you have put your foot down and started on it it can only get easier from now onwards.
