Test Success!: How to Be Calm, Confident and Focused on Any Test by Ben Bernstein, PH.D is a book which title really “called out ” to me. I’m constantly looking out to learn how to be a better coach and teacher to my kids. Now that the eldest in in elementary school he will be facing formal tests and exams and I hope to prepare him in the best way possible.

In Dr Bernstein’s book he reveals that the secret to doing well in a test is by learning how to reduce the stress in your body, mind and spirit and to keep it at an optimal level throughout the exam. Stress comes from within and not the external environment. By staying connected to your body mind and spirit you will be able to focus and apply whatever you have learned in the test.

There are 3 areas -calm, confident and focused which affect your ability to perform in a test.  One has to be able to identify which area they are strong or weak in to be able to identify the trigger symptoms that causes one to disconnect.

Dr Bernstein provides many tips in his book on how to be aware of your body stressing up and gives tools for you to deal with the different stresses which you may face. He gives the ready handy tools on how to calm down, be confident and stay focus.

I like the quick check-ins at the end of each chapter which make a handy guide and summary of the key points. There are many case examples in each chapter coupled with short exercises on the how to implement the different tools given.

I found chapter 9 – Help for parents and Chapter 10-  For teacher really handy. The two chapters gave me a better inside of how to analyze my kids and identify their trigger points so that I’ll be able to give them the tools to overcome their stresses.

I certainly recommend this book to any parent who wants to help their children be fully prepared for any tests that will be facing in their academic life.
