Writer’s Workshop:Memorable Day at Work
It started off as a normal day. Wake up the kids and prepare them for breakfast. The trouble only started when I had to open the door to get the kids out of the house and walk the 5 yr old to his bus pick up point. I couldn’t find my set of keys. I normally hung the keys in the usual area where the key press is but that morning it was missing from its position. I figured out that one of the boys may have taken the keys and played with it tossing it around the house.
After frantically searching for the keys I managed to spot it and opened the door with it, rushed everyone out of the house so that Doggie boy won’t miss his school bus and closed the door with the keys hung in the key press. Feeling relieved that he didn’t miss his school bus I brought the other kids out for grocery shopping. I faced another shocked to find the keys missing again when I tried to open the main door after reaching home laden with bags of groceries.
Luckily I had my mobile with me and called R telling him about our predicament of being locked out of the house. R’s office isn’t too far from home and he managed to take time off to come home just to open the door for us. The kids were extra nice that day as they didn’t fuss that day but played happily at the playground and feasting on the cheese and Yakult that we bought till their dad came home.

Oh my goodness, don’t worry you’re not alone on this! I’ve locked myself too and worst is that hubby’s office is about an hour drive away from our house.
Here in Spain it’s really expensive to have your door opened with a locksmith (if there’s no other way you can open the door)… really expensive! :-O

I know that pain! The pain of remembering, just after you slammed the door, that you didn’t have your keys! Lucky for you hubby was close! And very fortunate that you had food for the kiddies! It might not have been so easy otherwise! Great story.

My key broke off in the door once when I took the dogs on an early morning walk. Luckily, I called my husband!

That is one of my fears: being locked out of the house with both kids, especially in the winter! I need to figure out a good hiding spot for a spare key.

Hi Dominique ~~ Yes, I’ve locked myself out of the house several times. A couple of times Mrs. Jim was either not in town or also had left her keys in the house. Those TWO TIMES I had to break a window to get in.
Once on a cold night after class I had locked my keys in the car with the motor running. That was very embarassing. It was in one of my other lives when I didn’t have a Mrs. Jim. The campus police Jimmied the door open for me.
Wikipedia has all about what we call Mardi Gras. Some in Singapore might celebrate it?
“”Mardi Gras season”, and “Carnival season”, in English, refer to events of the Carnival celebrations, beginning on or after Epiphany and culminating on the day before Ash Wednesday. Mardi gras is French for Fat Tuesday, referring to the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season, which begins on Ash Wednesday; in English the day is sometimes referred to as Shrove Tuesday, from the word shrive, meaning “confess.” at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mardi_Gras

@Jim,
I’ve been/seen a Mardi Gras when I was studying in Sydney..it was really fun. We don’t celebrate it here in Singapore as there are limited no of days set aside for each religion and it’s celebration as we are a multi-religious country.

It seems years ago, I got locked outside and I climbed through a window. Why on earth our window was unlocked and I can’t tell you why, but that’s how I got in. That’s been long ago to remember.

We have a key hidden in our yard. We change the location each year. Haven’t had to use it int he past few years. Too many times we locked our selves out!

I have been locked out of the house a few times! It wasn’t fun, I have climbed through our windows, creatively waited for someone to hear me throwing bark chips at the window…yes, it was a lot of fun.
Now, we have an issue to which we have not been able to figure out yet. When the electricity is out, we can not get into our house…yup…without damaging something….

There are those battery operated combination/fingerprint locks with alarm.. maybe you can consider those as an alternative to an electric powered one.

Don’t you just hate when this happens? I locked myself out of the house one winter morning rushing to work. I used my cell phone to call the house phone (good thing it was charged). Of course, my husband was in bed sleeping and didn’t hear it ringing. I had to walk around to the other side of the house in the snow and knock on the bedroom window for him to let me in. Wonderful post!

Yep, a long time ago it happened to me, and nothing was left for me than to call hubby and wait for an hour and a half.

I hate being locked out of my house. It’s only happened very rarely, but when it does, ugh. It’s the worst. Glad you were able to get back in!

I keep an extra key well hidden. I hate when I have to use it because it’s pretty disgusting getting to it, but it would take someone else days to find it.
February 17, 2012 @ 8:51 am
OMG, that’s a bad bad day. Did you manage to find your keys? I get very worried when I can’t find my keys
February 17, 2012 @ 9:08 am
@Shook,
yes.. the keys were in the key press where I left it :p
February 17, 2012 @ 12:48 pm
Don’t you need the key to lock your door when you leave your house?
February 17, 2012 @ 2:48 pm
Well, last Monday i think i almost have the same feeling as you, being locked out of my room. I was almost at the door and checked my pockets for the keys only to find out that they’re not there! I tried to recall the events of the day but couldn’t remember where the keys are…Fortunately when i checked the side pockets of my bag, the keys were there! Hehehe… Have a great weekend ahead Dominique…

I haven’t yet, but I”m always afraid that I will be and I’ll have to break a window 🙂 or call a door person. haha.
Glad R was close enough to come let you in.
Happy weekend!

I know I’ve done this before. Many a time I’m searching around the house for the keys, and then find them in the door – from the night before! Good thing R was close by! {:-D

My keys seem to only go Missing when I am in a hurry…
And they always Mysteriously appear in the Most obvious place after I frantically search the entire house for them…
And if I can’t locate the keys I Managed to Misplace, Mr. Jenny comes to the rescue…
