NMEDA- Information site for Mobility Challenged

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of NMEDA. All opinions are 100% mine.

Sometime life throws us a curve ball and it ends up with a family member suffering from mobility disability due to illness, accident or old age. If that person is the main driver in the house then you would need to source around for a specially adapted vehicle which would allow you to drive safely despite your disability.

Who can I look for for more information about getting theright equipment for a disable driver?

The NMEDA is a  American based non-profit trade association. This group does not sell anything. It  educates consumers on buying products from a NMEDA qualified dealer.

The main role of this association is to promote safe driving and equipment for disable people.   Their members are required to adhere to the safety standards of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. NMEDA dealers (members) are the ones who sell handicap vans and vehicle modifications for disabled people.

How can I be ensured that the NMEDA dealers are givingme quality service?

To ensure that the NMEDA qualified dealers are providing service of the highest quality they have to undergo the The Quality Assurance Program (QAP). This program  is the only nationally recognized accreditation program for the Adaptive Mobility Equipment Industry. It is based on the principle that in order to satisfy customers consistently, companies must have a systematic and documented approach to quality.

What can a NMEDA dealer do for me?

It is best to get wheelchair vehicles that are specially custom to your needs.  Each person’s needs are different and it is best to get the right driving solution customized to your specific lifestyle and needs. This can be done with a simple ” personal evaluation” at any NMEDA qualified dealer as they know what is best for you and are able to make the “best match”.

By being able to get around the problem of mobility by having a custom fitted vehicle it would minimize the disruption to your family and your normal routines.  You also would be able to regain your independence faster and get back to the regular family life.

Weekend Reflections- Listening to the Great Parenting Show

WeekendReflections

The Great Parenting Show Teleseminar Series is something which I have been listening to lately. These series of FREE 12-week seminar features many great parenting coaches addressing a wide range of issues which today’s parents face.

This week I have listened to the Teleseminar by Hal Runkel the author of ScreamFree parenting. I have read his book before and he has many good tips on how to make your parenting journey more enjoyable.

In his talk he mentioned how to make your kids take onus /responsibility for his own action and not take responsibility for his action. Give him choices and also consequences for his action and not adhering to what is told.

He mentions not to force your kid into a corner or else to exert his/her independence is to defy you and to do the exact opposite of what you want them to do.

One of the listeners asked how to make their child do their homework faster and stop procastinating. I too face this problem with Ryan as he has a knack of dilly dallying and taking ages to get things done.

One of his suggestion is to set a 15 min timer for the child to sit down and do his work. If he is not able to finish then some of his privileges be taken away.  It will take some time to find out what works for your child and only by trial and error would one fine the best time for the child to sit down to finish up his homework within the given time. I may try that with Ryan over the weekend to see if it works with him.

Parents can make a change by changing their attitude towards their child. Let your child know how you feel and what you will do if they are not focusing. Do not jump in and take responsibility for their children’s actions or mistakes and let them be responsible for the decisions that they make while giving suggestions on what they can do to solve their own problems.

Parents play a “helper” role instead of a dictator so that the children know they have to take charge of their own decisions.

Sometimes we as parents must learn how to let go and let the kids make their own mistakes/decisions so that they will be able to grow into independent adults. It doesn’t pay to constantly “baby” time as it will only do more harm then good to them.

I do recommend that you sign up for this series of free tele-seminars as there are lots of anecdotes which are very beneficial for enhancing your life as a parent.
