School Struggles: A Guide to Your Shut-Down Learner’s Success by Richard Selznick, PHD is a 5 part book which teaches step by step how you can help your struggling kid.
In part 1 the author teachers how to identify which stage your child is in reading and how to help him at each particular stage. There are takeaway points at the end of each section for the reader to ponder and reflect on. They also help in summarizing what is being taught in the book so it is easier for the parent to reflect on what has just been read.
There are many examples and helpful suggestions being offered in the book to help parents identify what help their child needs in dealing with school. Each child functions differently and may need different methods to coax them to perform. Sometimes the method that we use are less then effective.
Parts 2 to 5 deal with how you can help your child if they have ADHD,difficulty in learning or socialization. There is no one cure for all the problems that your child is facing which makes him disinterested or shut off from school. However as a parent you can help to lessen their stress by teaching your child how to cope with the increasing workload.
The author does give tips on how to help your child cope and be able to understand them properly. This is without yelling and getting both the child and you frustrated.
The practical, down-to-earth tone and helpful, easily applicable tools helps parents avoid staying awake at night worrying about their child’s learning and school experience.
My thoughts.
There is a lot of information given on the need for parents to be patient and understanding towards their kids. Many a times we blame ourselves or the kids for not being able to keep up with the system. However it maybe the system which is moving at too fast a pace for the child instead.
My 5 yr old Doggie boy is in the midst of transition between kindergarten and elementary school and I have gathered many helpful tips from the book on how to properly prepare him for school during these few months.
I recommend this book for any parent who is dealing with kids who are struggling in school. You can purchase this book online at Amazon.
