SOC: Social Media, Alexa Rankings and Increasing Stats.

This week I’m answering Fadra’s questions on
What feels overwhelming to you right now and how are you coping?
I have been thinking a lot about how to bring the blog up a notch. I’ve been actively blogging since being home with Tiger girl. I’m learning a lot about social media and how to build up my brand and promote this blog. There has been quite a few things which I have changed here on the blog in order to drive up more traffic and improve on it’s stats.
- I’ve joined quite a few different groups/forums to get more exposure to the blog.
- Give the blog a makeover and make it is easier to share my posts via twitter, facebook and google + with social media friendly buttons.
- Blog more frequently and have more varied articles/posts on the blog.
- Comment on blogs.
I’ve seen an increase in traffic overall but what has been dismaying is my Alexa rankings. I’ve been trying to get it down to 100,000 but it is taking ages. The most disappointing thing is that I’ve seen many sites move down to 100,000 and below so easily and it seems effortless for them. My ranking however have moved in the opposite direction. It was down to 103,000 a few months back but have risen to 121,325 as of writing of this post. I know that Alexa ranking has to do with others having the Alexa toolbar installed and visiting your site. The only conclusion I can come to after reading through different posts on how to reduce one’s Alexa’s status is that there has been an influx of visitors who visited my site without having the Alexa toolbar installed. Anyone has suggestions on how to get my Alexa ranking down to 100,000?

I think what you are doing is good, I think if you have a good blog people will come to it often, I just started my blog is January of this year and I already have over 300 followers, and alot of traffic, not really sure how things happen, but it did. I wish you success with you blog.

People always say not to focus on numbers but it’s hard when you are trying to make this your career. I just looked at your FB numbers. WOW! I’d rather have advice from YOU!
Here’s what I know about Alexa. It helps when people have the Alexa toolbar installed when they visit your site. I’ve even been in groups where we did a weekly exchange and continued to visit each other’s sites using the toolbar. It also helps to have people write a review of your site on Alexa. But in the end, what does it all mean? I really have no clue. I haven’t check my ranking in a long time!

@Fadra,
Some sponsors do look at your Alexa number as an indicator of traffic on your site. I’ve heard that you have to get it below 100,000 so that your site would be more “attractive” to them. There are some tricks to boost FB stats:P

Don’t get too wrapped up in stats..keep writing great articles! Your facebook numbers are amazing, so you’re going something right!

It’s all so overwhelming! I took a break from looking at numbers this month – I have no idea where I stand with things. It’s more relaxing that way!
I’ll focus on that again next month but with the summer I’m nervous on how it will go.

I try not to look at numbers because it only makes me feel frustrated. And what’s worse is that I don’t even know what my Alexa ranking is. I think I am about to quit Klout, too. I’m tired of being evaluated and always feeling like a failure. Sigh.
I wish I knew how to help, but like Fadra said, it seems like you could teach me/us a few things!!

This is all so new to me! I just started blogging on May 8th and I have to admit that I have no idea what Alexa is. I’m going to have to check it out! I do know that I’ve been trying to build my audience which is difficult when you’re blogging about religion and it can be a little frustrating when you’re not a patient person. Patience is definitely not MY virtue! LOL! But, all in all, I am really proud of my blog and of how many people have visited it thus far. Thank you for posting what you’re doing to up your numbers. You’re doing great and I look forward to learning from you and others successful bloggers like yourself :o)

My rank is so high so I can’t really offer any advice.I do get wrapped up in numbers at times but then I just write what I want.

I have never even heard of Alexa before! What is the Alexa toolbar?
May 28, 2012 @ 8:05 pm
@Jen,
Alexa Toolbar is a toolbar for Chrome and Firefox which tells the ranking of your site against others.. example would be the following
http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/dominiquegoh.com(That's my data in Alexa database).

Wow- all your numbers look great to me! I just started a few months ago, and I’m just trying to get to 500 followers on Twitter and Facebook before Blogher. That was my goal- but now I feel like I’m aiming low. You are very inspirational!

@Gurrilla Mom,
I’m sure that you be able to get your 500 followers on twitter and facebook. I haven’t tried out blogher yet as I have heard that they restrict you doing ads from some other networks and such.

I definately understand how hard it is to boost numbers!! My sister and my blog has just reached its first year and we’re still working for 30 followers! But we don’t mind too much (at least not all the time :D). Just being able to write keeps us blogging. But way to go! I hope you get your Alexa ratings where you want them really really soon!!

Very impressed by your FB likes! It seems strange that advertisers would look at Alexa rankings if they are based on what the searchers have on their sites rather than on page views or something like that which would show up regardless of installations on a person’s site.
Best of luck to you!
