Creating your own website need not be a complex and mammoth task. It is not as complicated as it seems. Many of you may not know but I have been helping clients set up their own website for their business. Having a website is essential nowadays to extend a business reach to it’s potential clients. Many people nowadays do not have the time to physically go to a shop to browse for what they may need and prefer to do purchases online in the comfort of their homes.

How to build a website?

What should I do then?

Here are five steps  which you can take to  create your website.

  1. Purchase and Register  your Domain name. There are many different registrars available to register your chosen domain name. Eg: Name.com and GoDaddy.com are sites which you can visit to check if your chosen name is available or has been already taken by others.  It is recommended that you select a name that is easy to spell or has relevance to the type of website you are looking to set up. A top level domain like a .com domain is recommended as most often people associate websites with a .com.
For this blog- Dominique’s Desk I have chosen to use my name Dominique Goh as the domain name as it represents me and is my name. Therefore you see as above the domain name used is http://dominiquegoh.com.
  2. Set up your hosting
A web hosting is where you put your website/pages for view on the internet. Prices range from as low as $5/mth  for shared hosting to $30/mth for a dedicated server.  It is important for you to choose the right hosting company for your site. I personally had encountered problems with hosting companies before and it wasn’t easy to find a hosting company that will not bail on you or screw up your website as they have over stuffed their servers. If you are interested I’m hosting this blog at Oryon. Net
  3. Connect your domain to your hosting companyIt is important to connect both together to get your domain up and running. You will need to point your domain to the name servers of the hosting company.  It takes about 12-24 hours for the domain to be propagate from the domain register to the web host.
  4. Plan your website design
You need to determine the type of site you would want to create.  Do you need a static website with the company information, an e-commerce site with shopping cart features, a blog or all of the above?  Once you have decided on what you need you can either use a ready made template or get one custom made by a web designer that meets your needs.
  5. Publish and Promote your website
After the pages to your site has been created you will need to publish them to make your site “live”.  Promotion through various social media outlets and setting up related accounts  is also important to get your page “known” to the rest of the world.

Even after following these steps if you still find trouble setting up your websites you can  hire me to  assist you.

Building Your Own Website Instantly

In this day an age it is important for businesses to have an online presence. The best way to do so would be to create a website showcasing your own product or services. This would help to increase the reach of your business and gather  potential clientele for the company.

Creating a website need not be a mind blogging affair. You do not need to be an expert in HTML or CSS in order to create one.  Many of you may not know that I have dabbled in  building websites. I used to make one page websites to showcase what the Science community has done for the school and manage the Science webpage in the school I used to teach at.

However the greatest challenge I had in website building was when I started of  building my dad’s budget travel website. It was a website that had to be multi-page , linking from each page, a contact form feature and a payment gateway. I spent quite awhile online browsing through and studying other budget travel websites online before taking the plunge.

I was glad to find  website design software to help me in my website creation. There were many different templates  which I could choose from that suited the budget travel website which he wanted me to create. I found by using the software and adding in the relevant information I could create an info page telling about the various type of information which the website would showcase like the budget hotels, travel safety tips, places of interest and other relevant tourist details. I could also create pages for each budget hotel stating their rates and amenities. There was also the option of adding a contact form so I could be able to receive queries from  potential customers and taking booking by them. It was also a breeze to add in a paypal gateway so that I would be able to receive deposit payments for rooms that were booked online.

Making my own website sparked my interest in learning more about website design and creation. From there I moved on and started reading up and learned a bit of HTML using Dreamweaver. My next task is to revamp this budget travel website which I created four years ago and build it up from scratch.
