Saving Savvy by Kelly Hannock

Saving Savvy: Smart and Easy Ways to Cut Your Spending in Half and Raise Your Standard of Living…and Giving  by Kelly Hancock  is one of the books that I have reviewed this month.

Kelly’s book gives practical tips on how to save by doing the following

  • Stocking up
  • Properly utilizing your freezer
  • Meal planning
  • Using coupons
  • Shopping wisely

She dishes out many practical tips on how to get good bargains and learn how to never pay full price for any items.  Through reading her book I picked up a couple of tips which I could add on to improving my spending habits and be more prudent in my purchases.

There are some simple recipes in her book like making pizza dough and examples on meal planning to show how one can stretch the dollar.

What I enjoyed about reading the book

  • I learned that it is important to do a regular rain-check on your pantry to avoid having expired items and wasting the supplies that you have purchased.
  • How easy it is to do meal planning and the benefits of doing it weekly.

What I found irrelevant to me in the book

Being a book based on USA certain tidbits which she mentioned in the book were not really applicable to my daily life. Staying in Asia we do get most vegetables and fruits all year round and seldom have to do with “seasonal” purchases.  Couponing is also not very possible here as many businesses do not offer discounts through coupons.

Another thing is that westerners are more fond of freezing their food while for most Asians (and my family in particular) we rather eat fresh produce daily and are not that open to eating frozen food that has been thawed.

In all I found this book a very useful read if you are into saving via couponing  and freezing of food.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of  Saving Savvy: Smart and Easy Ways to Cut Your Spending in Half and Raise Your Standard of Living…and Giving for review purposes. All opinions are 100% my own.

Saving money this Christmas

Christmas is around the corner and we will be going on holidays.  This time we will be heading over to Cebu, Phillipines for a change.

Here are two tips that I have for travelling on a budget. on  a budget.

  1. Book your Ticket online. We are travelling budget as it is a relatively short 3 hour flight. I scrolled through each day to select the best prices for both flight both ways as there were different prices for flying on different days. Flying  midweek or early in the morning are relatively cheaper then weekend and late morning flights.By booking our tickets online we managed to get the best prices and did not have to pay fees to a travel agency.
  2. Plan in AdvanceWe started planning the itenary for our holiday about 1 month ago. I source around for the different places of interest and the best hotel deals so that we were able to get the best value for our budget.
