10 Reasons why I won’t publish your comments
I have been reading about S.P.A.M control lately and have done some changes on this blog. If you have noticed I’ve installed G.A.S.P and done away with Akismet and AJAX Forced preview. I’m quite pleased with the results as it has lower the number of spam by bots. However there is still the issue of human spam which I am incurring. I’m dwelling on moderating all comments or continue to allow comments from commenters who have previously approved comments to have their comments auto published.
What do you suggest?
Here are 10 reasons which would make me press “DELETE”
- You write a super spammy comment with errors and simply unbelievable like the following.Thank you for sharing excellent informations. Your web site is very cool. I am impressed by the details that you have on this web site. It reveals how nicely you understand this subject. Bookmarked this web page, will come back for extra articles. You, my friend, ROCK! I found simply the info I already searched all over the place and just could not come across. What a perfect site.
- Too much self promotion.
If you constantly leave many links to your site besides the one given by comment luv.If I’m feeling nice I’ll edit out your comment and leave only one link to your site.
- Linking from unrelated sites
If you are mentioning about kids and am linking to a adult video site it’s a no-no for me and I’ll delete your comment.
- Linking to a poorly set up site/blog
I’ll not hesitate to delete your comment if you are just wanting to get a link back to your site which just has a few posts about selling different luggage bags.
- Linking to your business website
I’m not sure where most of you stand with this as I mostly have commenters who have their own blog. I would delete the comment if for example you are trying to link by putting a comments on my post on kitchen renovation back to your website selling kitchen equipment or counter tops. I have though about this for awhile before deciding on pressing the delete button.If I am doing a sponsored post and am linking to you website then it’s okay for you to comment on the post but it doesn’t seem appropriate for me to allow other “competing” business some link juice via the comments section.
- Writing in CaPital LEtters
I related writing in CAPITAL LETTERS as shouting and trying to get ATTENTION. I only write in CAPITAL LETTERS when I’m angry and making DOUBLY SURE that I get your ATTENTION.
- You use profanities in your comment.I’m all for censorship as there are family members and friends reading this blog. There are many ways of leaving your opinions and using vulgar or “strong” language is something I will not accept.I would first try to edit out all the profanities while trying to retain as much of the original comment. However if it’s impossible to do so then it’s delete!
- You are launching a personal attack through the comment.
I do agree that readers may have different view from mine and accept their opinions. However if I view that your comment is written in bad taste I wouldn’t hesitate to delete it.
- One line unrelated comment.If you noticed I do let one line comments pass through as I sometimes do the same on others blog. However if you leave a comment that seems totally irrelevant to the post or something which I have commented to on your site – I will delete.
- You posted a duplicate comment.
Enough said. It must be a mistake on your part.

Very insightful list, especially for a newbie like me. I haven’t come across many spams, I don’t think, but I’d be sure to watch out for these. Thanks!

Wow! I didn’t know one can review or edit or delete comment. I get nasty comments or comment that link to pornography website in my blog. Argh….
August 16, 2011 @ 10:36 am
@Shook
Yes it’s possible just set your comments to moderate all in blogger and you can edit them before publishing. Even if they have been published you still can delete them if you think they should be removed afterwards.

This is a very good list. I’ve been getting a lot of #1 lately and I’ve been publishing them because they are usually on older posts and don’t have a link back. Now I’m questing if I should or not. I also get a lot of Japanese/Chinese comments. Yeah, won’t be posting that. Thanks!
August 16, 2011 @ 12:15 pm
I moderate all my comments before it got posted, well, those where the IP/email addresses are 1st time registered on my blog anyway. Frequent commenters on my blog will be able to see their comments published immediately. The rest goes straight to my pending/spam folder and I will normally checked all and delete 🙂

I got it now. Changed and saved my comment setting. Thanks dear
August 16, 2011 @ 7:33 pm
I don’t moderate my comments, but then again my commenting system allows me to delete any comment that I deem inappropriate (and I do not hesitate to do so). I agree with most of what you have up on your list. 🙂

@Buckeroomama,
that’s great that Intense Debate is working for you. I haven’t really tried it before and wondering if it will be a good fit for my blog.
August 16, 2011 @ 9:08 pm
There are minor hitches, but I can’t be bothered migrating to another commenting system and risk losing all the old comments. That said, I’m not sure if the hitches have to do with Intense Debate at all or if it’s a Blogger issue. Either way, I can live with these ‘hitches.’
August 16, 2011 @ 9:12 pm
@Buckeroomama,
Thanks for your feedback on it.. I think I’ll stick to the default comment system that I have installed here at WordPress for now. I’ve read about the glitches in Intense Debate and think will hold out trying it out.

Great list! I have absolutely NO tolerance for profanity. I may be a bit of a “prude” but even some words that seem acceptable to people, I will not allow on my site. Its really a reflection of what I stand for and if I never use these words in regular life, then why let it slide on my blog?
August 17, 2011 @ 12:10 am
Such a good list. Some people’s comments really make me think society is going to hell in a handbasket!

I too get hundreds of spam comments a day but they all just get filtered out by Akismet (well, nearly all) and I let it go at that. I also don’t usually allow links back to someone’s product page if they are shamelessly promoting with nothing relevant to say.
But I also used to have a plugin installed that counted the number of times a comment was left by a user and after X number of comments, it would turn the links into “do follow” links instead of the usual no follows. I figure if they come back often it’s worth rewarding them. Think I forgot to reinstall it in the move though — will have to look it up again.
I’m pretty stringent with my comments, though. If it’s useless and clearly a promoter, it’s gone. If it’s a good comment but an icky product, sometimes I might just remove the link instead 😉
August 17, 2011 @ 9:00 am
@Tiffany,
I think you are talking about the plugin- DoFollow. I recently did install it on the blog but have removed it as I don’t feel that it’s really improving my site. I also noticed that searches for “do follow” were popping up in my blog.

I’ve been really happy with GASP.
I can’t stand spam!
August 17, 2011 @ 9:25 am
I delete comments pretty much the same way you do. I check my spam everyday because I always find good comments in my spam. I, however, rarely get spam comments that were publish. I dont moderate my comments. Have a great evening! 🙂
August 17, 2011 @ 10:07 am
I totally agree with your list!
August 17, 2011 @ 2:37 pm
Oh oh… I might fall into the category of writing in Capital Letters at times for certain words in my whole chunk of comments and NOT the whole comment in Caps. Must remember cannot do that over here. Ooops! I just had a ‘NOT’ in full Caps! *
Errrr… or are you saying that the whole comment was presented in Full Caps?
August 19, 2011 @ 2:46 am
I used to get way more spam when I was using wordpress, than I do now using blogger. I was on self-hosted wordpress for 3 years, but had way, way too many problems with it, (breaking all the time, not letting me change my password in the database, and not sending me comment notifications.) I still get the ocasional spam comment, and yeah I still delete them. Otherwise, I don’t usually delete comments. I suppose if there was a comment left on my blog that was full of nothing but profanity, I’d probably delete it, because I do have some friends, (and possibly some family,) that read my blog on ocasion.
August 19, 2011 @ 7:44 am
@Noelle,
I too get more spam here on wordpress then on blogger but being self-hosted gives me more flexibility. I haven’t had much problem with wordpress breaking on me and other technical issues. All my family members and friends read my blog including my Mom and MIL therefore the need for censorship 🙂

Blogger will let you publish from custom domains now, and embed just about anything. They’ve launched some good stuff over the past couple years, like the ability to have static pages and a template designer. But if you want to actually tweak the PHP, then wordpress is the way to go. I found that doing that often gave wordpress errors that, even when I took whatever I just put in out, it still wouldn’t fix them. I’d end up having to reinstall wordpress when that happened. I think I installed wordpress at least 15 or 20 times in 2008 and 2009.
August 19, 2011 @ 11:36 am
@ Noelle, Oic..
I normally try out the tweeks first on a sample blog on a subdomain before transferring it to my main blog. Yup.. I know that Blogger has done a lot of improvements now and is better blogging platform from when it first started out. I guess that sticking with blogger for you really saved you lots of headache. Have a great Friday.
August 19, 2011 @ 8:46 pm
Yeah, I remember staying up late at night before blogathon 2007 trying to fix wordpress errors. One day in 2009, after 3 years of using wordpress, I just decided it would be way easier to switch to blogger.

I don’t like SPAM informations either!
Great post!

It tough to decide on which comments are acceptable. My general guideline is whats said must help keep the conversation going somehow, that’s all I care. I don’t have a problem letting promo happen, we are all in this together. Anything nasty is always off limits for me however.
