Bleah.. I’m sure that’s how Monkey boy is feeling as he will be returning back to school next Monday. School vacations are officially over and it’s time to brush up on all the academic subjects and learning. We didn’t get around to doing any abacus practice and learning more Japanese but we did get started on English and Chinese composition writing and had lots of fun. Monkey Boy is looking forward to our next holiday in July when we go on a short weekend staycation at a local hotel.
1. What is your current favorite tv show?
I don’t have any ..does the NEWS count? I enjoy Sci-fi and investigative shows like C.S.I but I rarely have time nowadays to watch the telly.
2. What’s the worst haircut you ever got?
It would been the time I was in Melbourne as a student. I can’t really remember what hairstyle was that but recall that I went immediately to another shop for a re-cut.
3. What was something that you did as a child that you thought you were so cool for doing?
Traveling overseas with my classmates on a student exchange program to Taiwan. It was really fun and it was the first time I traveled without my parents.
4. Do you have any GREAT frugal family fun tips?
Baking, visits to the park, going swimming or bowling.
5. Would you drive across country if you had the money to fly?

I would certainly fly as I really doubt that I will be able to remain sane on a long road trip with the kids. We live on an island so any road trip will involve driving up to Malaysia which at the moment I’m not keen on.

How do you persuade a reluctant kid to pick up his pencil and write?

I used to not be able to get Trinity to write, but each day I persisted a couple of lines or what ever she wanted to draw with the pen.
If he is in school, he should be very motivated. Perhaps find out what he likes to draw or write and just let him go at it.

for both my daughters, they loved getting personal journals to write in. they would write in them off and on but i always made it writing for themselves which they were always happy to do. good luck with monkey boy!

For some reason Princess Nagger has always been reluctant to write – she considered it too much ‘work’.
When she got interested in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series of books, they have a journal one that encourages kids to fill in the blanks and write their own entries – once she started in on that, she seems to have changed her mind about writing being ‘work’.

I have a 5 year old son and he doesn’t like to write either I created a sticker chart and after so many stickers he gets a prize but he has to do some writing hope that helps!

I’m a great gramma now and therefore it’s been along time since I had a five year old. I think I started teaching them the alphabet first, and then how to write their name, etc. I’m sure Monkey boy will learn and enjoy writing, well maybe in time. hee, hee.

It’s hard to say. maybe offer a treat after the book work is done?
maybe let daddy do it with him? they love to do things like daddy.

That’s tough. Especially with some boys. My oldest boy is 9 now and still doesn’t like to write much. My daughter, 6, loves to. Sometimes we’d make up stories about things my son enjoyed (monster trucks, dinosaurs, etc.) and have him draw a picture then write a few sentences about it. Or writing a note to a friend or family member can be encouraging.
We homeschool, so I decided not to push too hard until he was older. Many boys are more focused on gross motor skills at that age and develop fine motor skills later. My son wasn’t ready until he was older and I didn’t want him to hate writing so we were casual about it and let him go at his own pace.

I’m lucky in that my kids love to read and write. Maybe as an incentive you could have him write a daily journal about things he likes to do. Then at the end of the month take him to one of those places?
