Christmas day is just around the corner. I hear festive music being played on the radio and television. Christmas is suppose to be the season where little kids look forward to receiving presents. However as one ages the novelty and hype dies down getting presents are not as important as it used to be.
There was this one Christmas my little boy received one of the worst Christmas present ever from this relative. Luckily he didn’t open the present there and then when it was given to him. He would have been so bitterly disappointed with what he would have seen. I don’t mind recycle presents as long as they are thoughtful and age appropriate for the recipient. What really disgusted me with the present was that it was a real cheapskate act of give giving with a real piece of junk. Which adult in their right mind would wrap up a door gift given free to them at an annual dinner and give it to a three year old? It even had the company’s logo printed in bold on it. We all knew this relative was famous for recycling presents but this has gone way over the line for me.
I promptly place that present where it should have been- in the bin. It was great that kids at that age have a very short memory and he forgot about that present as he was more busy playing with his cousins. When he finally came around to opening up all the presents given to him that year he didn’t realized that he was short of one. It didn’t matter though.
From that year onwards I made a mental note to myself to hijack the kids presents and do a check to see if it is worth opening.

Sometimes it would be better if people just didn’t bother, I know its not all about the gifts but to a certain extent this time is about the children. Maybe you should recycle it back to them this year
Dropped by from Writers Workshop – glad I did.

Yuck. I would have thrown it out too.
Sounds like the gift my ex gave my older son for his 2nd birthday. An empty DVD case.
Um… thanks?

That’s awful. Why even bother if you’re that cheap?

I’m a drop in from Writer’s Workshop…
Some people are so cheap! If that’s how it works, why bother even getting a gift?!

@Danielle,
I too wonder why they bother giving a gift if they are not sincere.

Wow, what a horrible attempt at a gift! Your son wouldn’t have noticed but of course you did! Who does that??
