Weekend Reflections – Being Lucky

WeekendReflections

The IPamper from OSIM

This year I too had a very memorable Children’s Day celebration.  Our school shifted the annual teacher’s day dinner to Children’s Day eve so that our Muslim colleagues would be able to celebrate together with us as it would be after their Ramadan.

This year my name was one of those picked during the lucky draw. I was surprised to have won the 3rd prize of an OSIM IPamper (R.P.$198SGD)

This gift sure comes in handy for me as the past week I have been suffering from strain and stiff muscles due to insufficient rest as Roy is down with stomach flu. It has been extremely exhausting taking care of this grouchy toddler.

I never expected the win as the odds of being picked for the 20 Lucky Draw Prizes is already not that big with a staff size of about  90-100 teachers (10% chance of being picked for one of the prizes) Calculating the possibilities the odds are really small to be able to get  one of the top 3 prizes.

I’m really happy with the win and grateful that things seem to be getting better for our family this year.

When is the last time you recalled that you were Lucky?

Tempt me Thursday – Book Recommendations

There are  interesting books which I had read or will be reading soon which I would like to introduce to you.

For the Parent

  1. The Mumpreneur Diaries by Mosey Jones This book talks about Mosey’s journey as a mumpreneur after the birth of Boy Two. The book gives an account of the problems that she encountered after deciding to quit her job and work from home.* I have yet to read this book and will be starting on it soon.
  2. Don’t Give me that Attitude
This book talks about 24 things kids do and how to stop them is a really handy guide to all parents and teachers. I found some of the techniques used in the book to correct certain bad attitudes Ie: Being bad mannered, arrogant, stubborn very useful.  Borba gave her practical advice on how to change the attitude of the child over a period of three to four weeks. The change may not be instant however when the change does occur it will last a lifetime.
    (My review on this book)
  3. Queen Bee Moms & KingPin DadsWismen in her book mentioned about the different personality type of moms and dads which you may face. From the  Queen Bee to the Outcast mom there is a classification for all different types of parents.(My Review)
  4. Soul Discovery by Joan Marie WhelanThis book by Joan talks about the need for positive reinforcement.  To give others the gift of joy, love and acceptance would be the best present for one to receive.
Very often the misery that we suffer is self-inflicted and due to
use judging others or judging ourselves against others.

  5. Wear Clean Underwear by Alexis NeelyAlexis, a lawyer by profession, writes about the need to set up a will for your kids. Many a time we do not think about the possibility of us not living to a ripe old age and postpone the need to write/state down how our assets are going to be distributed. If you were to die today do you have procedures in place so that your kids are able to go on living life as normal? By reading her book I got an inside to the importance of planning for my own children and settling their care in the unfortunate event we are suddenly no longer around to support and guide them. ( My review here)
  6. No More Misbehavin’- Michele Borba
This is the 2nd book by Borba which I have read.  It is similar to the book mentioned above as it teacher one how to find out the cause of the behaviour and how to correct it straight away.
  7. Your Family Constitution
I recently reviewed this book by Scott Gale a few weeks back. The book teaches one how to set up your own family goals and vision which every member of the family can work together to achieve.

Book for Kids

  1. Elmer in the SnowThis book by  David McKee talks about a patched work elephant journey through the jungle to the snowy caps with his friends. Being a caring and thoughtful elephant he wanted to give his friends some reprise from the awful heat.  There are some ingenious ideas thought up by Elmer when he pulled a prank on his friends.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
This is one of the first books by Eric Carle which I purchased for the boys. I found it very interesting and the boy simply loved counting along. They  would put their fingers against the holes in the book as they followed the caterpillar  through eating the different foods. ( Read more about this book here)

3. Twisted Tales
Twisted  Tales by Innovated Kids is one of the rare comic books which I have come across that can be used as a tool for teaching alternative endings. It is really ingeneous how the writer comes up with these different endings for popular classic kids tales like Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Red Riding Hood and Three little pigs.
