The school holidays are over and the kids are back at school. Term 3 has started and it is back to the school routine for Doggie boy .No more late nights, fun play dates and  weekday outings as it back to the study table and focusing more on their academic development.

Doggie boy, my 5.5yr old will be entering Primary one next year and I’m currently getting him ready for entering “big school” next year. To ensure that he gets the best preparation for this transition from Kindergarten to Primary school it is important that he doesn’t miss too many days of school due to illness.

To keep him healthy I have been doing the following with Doggie boy

  1. I make sure that he eats healthy foods and drink lots of water everyday.
To minimize him eating junk foods and too many sweets  I have been cooking healthy dinner for the kids daily during the week. This would ensure that he gets the proper  vitamins and nutrients  which my growing boy requires.kids dinnerOne of the kids favourite- rice with breaded chicken, fish cake and vegetables.
  2. I make sure that he gets enough sleep.
Kids his age need about 8-10 hours of sleep so it is off to bed by 9.30pm during school nights.
  3. I set a study routine for him.
Doggie boy has 45 min to an hour of lessons with me after dinner before he is allowed 20-30 minutes of play time on the computer/ Xbox or toys. He is taught how to balance study and play and how to prioritize his time.
  4. I teach him about good hygiene practices.
I insist that Doggie boy takes a bath upon returning home from school. This will prevent him from bringing germs and dirt into the house. He is also expected to wash his hands after using the bathroom, before eating meals and whenever they are dirty.
  5. I bring him swimming weekly and we try to take the stairs instead of the lift as often as we can.
This gives him chance to exercise regularly  and keep fit and healthy.
  6. Getting him to stay home if he is sick
Making him stay home till he is fully recovered will make it easier for him to get well and also limits his exposure to other children at school who may be sick with communicable illness.

ABCmouse.com Review

Abc Mouse Screen shot 1

A few months ago I received an invitation to review ABCmouse.com. I have been looking for interactive lessons to compliment the kindergarten lessons which my 5 yr old was being taught in school and add on to the homeschooling material which I have compiled for my 22 month old. I was glad to try out this website as it could cater for the needs of my toddler and pre-schooler.

Information about the website

For those who haven’t heard about it this ABCmouse.com  is an online curriculum site for kids aged 2-6 yrs old  which has more then 3,500 learning activities spanning reading, maths, science, social studies and music. The activities included in the program come in the form of books, puzzles and games. There are exploratory activities and original songs.

I set up two accounts – one for my 5 yr old and the other for my toddler. Lesson were selected based on their ability level and they  set off to explore the site  with my supervision.

The student accounts open up to the classroom setting where the child has the chance to choose between ” free learning” or “set learning” using the suggested learning path. At the end of each lesson the child is given tickets which they can redeem in the marketplace for ” treats”

Besides studying in the classroom the child can also visit the farm or the zoo where they can play games and activities related to the animals in the farm or zoo.  My 5 yr old enjoyed the  games and love collecting the tickets at the end of each activity.  He exchanged his tickets for decoration items for his room. He is currently working towards getting enough tickets to decorate the whole bedroom with all his favourite things.

My 22 month old has been using this website to help her learn her alphabets. She is able to recognize some of the alphabets like letter “A”, “T” and “O” so far. I like how they go through each alphabet and have a range of activities from lesson, word, chant, book, tracking, art , puzzles etc to cater to different learning abilities of the child. Tiger girl is currently unable to follow and complete some of the activities like tracing and the puzzles but as time goes and repeated exposure to the program I’m sure she be able to pick up the skills.

My thoughts

I find this is one of the most comprehensive website that I have reviewed to date. It offers stellar content and will certainly be a addition  for any homeschooling parent or parent seeking a more interactive learning style for their kids.

Visit their site to purchase an annual subscription for their program or to learn more about their program. For a limited time you can get two months free with an annual subscription and add up to three children for the price of one!
