Writer’s Workshop: Have You Forgotten how to do this?
Living in the 21st century we are constantly pressed for time . Everyone seems to be in a hurry and unwilling to take time out to slow down and really enjoy the moment. Since the technological revolution the world has certainly changed a lot. Peoples attitude and behaviour has changed and unfortunately more often for the worst then the better.
Here is a list of 8 things that I’m certain that many people have forgotten to do.
1) Be Courteous.
” Excuse me”, ” Please” ,”Thank you” and ” You’re Welcome” are words that should be said more often.
2) How to send cards or write letters
Everything is electronic nowadays. Even when the kids contact their grandma who stays in Hongkong it is through e-mail, skype or Whatsapp.
3) Be Patient
We have become accustomed to Fast delivery and fast service so when things don’t happen in an instant we get frustrated.
4) To think by ourselves
There seems to be an App for every single thing and most of the time we are too reliant on that or the internet to find out answers then to think rationally by ourselves what is right or wrong.
5) Be fully present
Every time I go out I see a lot of busy occupied with their electronic gadgets. While waiting for meals to be served in a restaurant I see many people seated at the table peering or busy with their hand phones or iPads. Hardly anyone communicates face to face with each other.
6) Read a hard copy book
Many books nowadays come in PDF or other electronic versions. Bookstores also have been closing down one after another. Very seldom do we get a chance to purchase a book and hold it in our hands to read.
7) Focus on health and well being first.
In the rat race for money and status health and well being is often neglected. This can have really detrimental effect on our body and spirit in the long run.
8) Having time to just chill
Sitting down at a cafe just to enjoy the tea and spend time enjoying the time you have on hand is really a rarity these days.
What are the things you think you have forgotten to do?
Would you start doing them again?

On before I love sending hand written letters and cards. But because of technology, I forgot to do so. These are great reminders, by the way. Happy New Year!

Sending cards and handwritten letters through the courier is really something I have been wanting to do again. Next year, I promise! 😀 Great list you have here also. If only people have this still, we’d be in a better place.

A nice take on the theme for today! There are some key activities here that we do need reminding of – thank you!

I totally agree with your list. I especially think the basic courtesies are being pushed aside. It’s sad, really.

I am horrible about sending written letters. I too love electronic communication.
I have always taught my kids how to be polite and to use their manners at a very young age. This is something that has been very important to me and I want my kids to be respectful of others. So many people don’t know these common simple words or gestures in today’s society. Those simple words go a long way and can even make someone’s day.

I agree with a lot of this. I think that common courtesy is not so common anymore. I have had situations where I held the door open for someone and they just walked through as though it was holding itself open. I have also had a few cases where i was struggling to juggle my son and a handful of groceries yet no one offered to lend a hand to open a door for me. I find it very sad that writing letters has become viewed as archaic. I LOVE receiving letters in the mail. it’s exciting to me. i also enjoy writing them. However, the thing that saddens me the most is the idea that print books may one day become obsolete because of the advent of eBooks. Sure, these eBooks are convenient, but they are nothing compared to the real thing. not for me, anyway.
I enjoyed reading your post and look forward to connecting with you during the Biannual Blogathon Bash this month. 🙂

This list is so true. I totally agree. When my son was still a small baby and still couldn’t talk, I have already started using words in #1 whenever I talk with him. It sure help to start early. I myself was raised by my grannies to say those words often.

Oh talking on the phone! I have vague memories of doing the all-night-on-the-phone thing… but somewhere along the line I became a phone-phobic! I much prefer in-person or email now. Go fig!

Thanks for the reminder. I was just with a group of women this week, catching each other up-to-date and one turned to another, an artist, and asked, “What’s happening with those notecards you designed?” “Nothing. Does anyone even send notecards anymore?”

I make sure I live by these rules for the exact reason you posted.
Yes, I am addicted to my game on my phone and tablet, but believe me when I tell you, I’m the first one to demand no phones, cell or landline at the dinner table. Each thing has a place and time in the world and I live and stay to that thinking.

great post! I agree with everything you’ve written. The one thing I actually wanted to apply back to my life is writing thank you cards, and just because cards. I started doing them again last week, and it just feels so good! Thanks for linking. Hope you have a great week!

It is a little heart-breaking to think that technology is destroying people’s ability to carry on an actual conversation!
I must admit that I need to work on my patience though because I do find myself wishing my packages would hurry up and get here sometimes… I can’t imagine how people centuries ago survived… ((winkwink)))
Thanks for linking to the letter “H”!
