Weekend Reflections- Of Weddings and Funerals

This weekend a distant relative of mine is getting married.  They only invited the older folks so I’m giving it a miss.  Seeing the elderly get all dolled up in their Sunday best to go to the wedding had me pondering how these young couples spend a fortune just for their special day. From tailor made wedding dresses to elaborate wedding decoration for the dinner venue one can easily spend between $20K to $100K. I really feel that it’s too extravagant to spend such a big amount if one is not really that financially capable.

It normally takes one to two years to prepare and put everything ready before a wedding. I remember back then we took our wedding photos one year in advance. We also had to book the church and dinner venue at the country club way in advance to ensure that we get the date of our choice. At that time we tried to DIY most of the items to keep the cost to a minimum.

Many people  will plan for their wedding but very few ever plan for their own funeral. Frankly speaking I too haven’t given much thought about my own funeral. One doesn’t know the expiry date on our live. Only GOD knows how long we are going to live in this world.

This year my boss attended  three funerals of her immediate family. It reminded me of how precious life is and how important it is for use to treasure the ones who we love and to ignore  those who are only a hindrance to our lives.

As one grows older we start to realize that sooner or later this day will come where we will depart from the earth. We start thinking of how to set aside a will and appoint guardians for our kids. We start to prepare for the  possibility that one or even both of us may suddenly depart before the kids are old enough to take care of themselves.

It can be a real hassle if there isn’t any clear instructions given to family and relatives on the arrangements for our kids in such times. I wouldn’t want the kids to be split up and brought up away from each other.  I feel that it is in their best interest for them to stay together so they can build up a close knit relationship.

R and I have drawn up our will but am in the midst of getting it altered to add in our latest addition to the family. R did express his wish to have his remains sent up into space if it is possible at that moment in time. I’m not sure if we would be able to afford such a luxury in time to come. Maybe he will have to make do with a rocket shaped urn instead. I on the other hand just wish to be placed in a heart shaped urn whereby one half would be for me and the other for him.

Coffee, Tea or Me?

Coffee and me do not mix. Here are 10 reasons why I don’t drink coffee.

  1. It smells funny.
  2. Coffee tastes yucky to me . I don’t like the strong bitter taste and  even ice milk coffee can give me a headache.
  3. I know that coffee can be addictive and I rather be addicted to drinking milk than coffee.
  4. It’s too cumbersome to make a pot of coffee. I’ll settle for a glass of water instead.
  5. I prefer drinking tea. Green Tea, Chrysanthemum , Earl Grey and Chamomile.
  6. I rather enjoy drinking milk. My favourite is strawberry milk although I do drink chocolate and white milk.
  7. Smoothies and milkshakes tastes so much better and there are so many flavours to them.
  8. Between a root beer float and a cup of ice coffee I rather take the float as there is vanilla ice-cream in it.
  9. Coffee is simply not appealing to me and I’ll rather skip it for a drink which sounds more interesting.
  10. I feel that coffee is more a man’s drink than for ladies so I’ll stick with tea.

What’s your take on  drinking coffee?
