Culture Fusion this Monday
Over the weekend when we brought the kids bowling we saw that the bowling alley had been decorated for Halloween. This banner really caught my eye. It isn’t really that scary but what caught my eye was the Chinese talisman that we sticking out from under the banner. It isn’t very clear in this picture but the talisman are the ones which you normally see at the doors to ward off hopping vampires in Chinese Ghost movies.
I found it super cool that they were infusing both Chinese and Western elements into their Halloween display. It reminded me that we are living in a fusion pot of different cultures. It is important for us to be able to understand our own culture and also at the same time embrace and be thoughtful of the cultures of others around us.
I’m striving to teach the kids about our Chinese culture and also how to be tolerant about the other cultures that we live in. It’s great that we live in a multicultural society. We can have the best of all cultures by taking part in the various festivities and sample a wide variety of foods.

I make it a point for Sophie to address her elders by their respective titles in dialect or mandarin. I don’t her to just simply address them by auntie and uncles and lose a generational tradition. Also I try to teach her to appreciate the various Chinese festive seasons like Chinese New Year, Dumpling festivals etc and teach her the meaning of them.

I’m learning how to balance both my culture and the culture my kids are growing up in. It will always be a mix. A very interesting mix.
