On the First Day of School in 2010

Next Monday marks the start of the new school term. Majority of my students are so not looking forward to waking up early and having to sit in class for lessons. I too am half- hearted in going back to school as it would mean no more waking up late and leisurely enjoying the time with the boys at home.

I know a couple friends of mine are a bit apprehensive about their child’s 1st day of school as a Primary 1 student. I too would be if Ryan was entering school next year.

Here is a short list which I have compiled for parents with kids entering P1 next year.

What to Expect on the 1st Day

  1. Bring a notebook and stationary to take down notes.

It is not necessary to bring  all the different textbooks and exercise books. The teacher will let them know their timetables and if they have brought any books it maybe kept in their own lockers or collectively by the teacher.During the first few days of school we normally set the class rules, brief the kids on school expectations and give out the time table for the class.

  2. P1 Buddy is assigned

As P1 students are relatively new to the school and the environment they are assigned older buddies (from P3 or P4) to  partner them for 2 to 3 days. These buddies will be in charge of showing  their younger buddies around the school and help them purchase their meals from the canteen during recess.

  3. Time to Socalize

The pupils are put into groups and normally timetable is suspended for all levels. The teacher will make use of this time to get to know the pupils better through a series of activities and games. If the teacher and students are new to each other it would be a great opportunity for both to bond with each other and learn more about their learning styles before starting on the teaching proper.

My Thoughts About Entering 2010

In a few days time we will be entering the new year. The start of the 2010 will bring a lot of new challenges and opportunities for me.

These few days we have been very busy with meeting after meeting in preparations for the start of the new school year.

Schedules and important dates are being marked off for 2010. Work will get more hectic as we start the new term. This week I am busy  de-cluttering and moving of my office space. In the current school that I am teaching it is the practice to shift your office cubicle as we are seated according to levels. I feel that it is great as it gives a reason to do an annual declutter and also start the year afresh.

I’m apprehensive about how I will be able to cope with the new roles and tasks that have been assigned to me at work and at home.  R’s job will require him to travel more and it would be more challenging  managing the kids.

However with the grace of GOD I’m sure that I will be able to cope with the added responsibilities and tight deadlines that I will have.

How do you feel about the coming 2010?
