I have been pondering about how to address this issue of sexuality with my kids and reading this book by Dr. Gloria really helped me have a clearer idea of what facts I would like to share with them.
The subject of sex is still a very taboo subject in our Asian culture and many parent still skirt around this issue about sexuality education for their kids. I personally do not recall my parents ever talking to me about this subject and any introduction was during biology lessons during secondary school.
I do intend not to let my kids be influenced by the hyped up fantasies being portrayed through the mainstream media by educating them on the facts from young. Therefore I find that it is important that I get to know more about this subject through the eyes of the experts.
The book, The Truth about Sex, is packed with historical facts and case studies about problems faced by couples. Through the knowledgeable eyes of a clinical sexologist myths and superstition are unravelled.
The chapters in the book help one understand the bond between intimacy and the array of different feelings associated with it. It covers both the physical and mental aspects dealing with sexuality. By knowing about yourself it will certainly help in enhancing your relationship with your spouse. In her book Dr Gloria addresses the different problems which couples have faced and how she helped them overcome them through therapy sessions.
I personally found reading the book refreshing as it is a breakaway from the stereotype of how sexuality is normally being portrayed. It also gave me a better understanding that every person’s understanding of this topic differs depending on upbringing and it is best to be upfront and clear with one’s spouse to prevent resentment and misunderstanding in a relationship.
