Today we celebrate Singapore’s 46th birthday since independence. There will be a celebration tonight at the floating platform at Marina Bay. The kids and I will be watching the parade live on our new flat screen TV in the comfort of our living room.

Here are 10 things which I like about National Day this year.

1. We get to watch the parade on our new 46″ SMART TV.
2. The kids get two days off school ( today and tomorrow) and I don’t need to rush  to get them ready for school.
3. Most people are headed for the beach or overseas for a short vacation therefore the shopping centers are not so crowded. The roads too are less crowded today.
4. Many places are having special sales and discounts up to 20% due to mark this special day.
5. I managed to get a new pair of shoes and the crockery that I have been looking for  from the department store.
6. We had a leisurely breakfast without the boys as they were over at the grandparents place.
7. The weather has been good. It’s isn’t too hot nor pouring buckets.
8.  The boys get to ride their bikes with their dad.
9. I get to enjoy spending time with the whole family.
10. It’s the start of birthday celebrations for my good friends and me who are all August babies.

As the year is coming to an end I can’t help thinking about Ryan and that he will be in K2 (Kindergarten 2) next year. 2010 will be the year that we will be registering him for Primary One .  I have already decided on which school to place him in and that is less one hassle for me.
My students just finished their end of year examinations and I had the opportunity to look at the Primary 1 papers. It seems that Ryan is up to par in the preparation for transition from Kindergarten to Elementary school. I just need to give him more practice in Mathematics.

I also took a look at the Secondary school selection which was given out to the Primary Six students.  Scanning through the various pages which listed the achievements of the different secondary school it got met thinking about what I will have to do after the kids enter primary school.

The emphasis nowadays is on a holistic environment and overall development of the child.  I intend to let Ryan and Roy try out all the different sports they are interested in and then choose a sport or two to master.

Education has always been a key point of worry and concern for most parents. From the day your child is born you start to plan which childcare/kindergarten you would like to send him to, which primary school should you aim to send him to.

If  you are aiming for a prestigious school like Eton House or ACS/Singapore Chinese Girl’s school be prepared to join the alumni, become a parent volunteer or even move to within 1km of the desired school in bid to increase the chance of your child entering the school.

Parents in  Singapore, like the rest of the world, place a heavy emphasis on getting their child in good school. I myself do hope that my child enters a reputable school so that he would be able to get a top notch education and will not “lose out” in this education race.

There are a few established  schools in my neighbourhood and I do hope that my boys get into one of them. To increase the chance of him getting to my preferred choice of schools I have used my ” special pass” when I returned to work last month.

I have just updated this book which I wrote last year and strongly recommend that you get a copy as it lists down in detail all the factors that you will need to consider before you register your child for Primary One.
