We (our kids 3 and 8 at the time) did go to California (where I am from) last year for Christmas as my hubby was in Iraq with his National Guard Unit. It was nice to have a Christmas with my family, but it would have been nicer to have him home! Besides that, you try driving from Florida to California (5 days 4 nights - each way) with little kids!!! I am very lucky to have a hubby that works hard and has a great job, however, UPS does not give time off from about October until January, so we tent to stay close to home around the holidays.
